Unquestionably, every song has been written to add firepower to the bandвЂ™s live show, but itвЂ™s nonetheless the strongest and most confident Prodigy album since вЂThe Fat Of The LandвЂ™.

ThereвЂ™s no explicit, over-arching theme, like there was with 1994вЂ™s вЂMusic For A Jilted GenerationвЂ™ and, thankfully, little notice taken of stylistic fashions in dance music, other than perhaps with вЂRhythm BombвЂ™, a collaboration with Towcester DJ Flux Pavilion. Despite occasional relief, itвЂ™s angry, using just about every strain of UK dance music thatвЂ™s bubbled up from underground in the bandвЂ™s lifetime вЂ“ techno (вЂDestroyвЂ™), drumвЂ™nвЂ™bass (вЂWild FrontierвЂ™, вЂRoadbloxвЂ™), dubstep (вЂInvisible SunвЂ™), breakbeat (вЂMedicineвЂ™, вЂRok-WeilerвЂ™), dance-rock (вЂGet Your Fight OnвЂ™, вЂWall Of DeathвЂ™) вЂ“ to create an intentionally dense and threatening barrage of sound, seemingly just for the hell of it.

вЂNastyвЂ™ is a funny track, and so is вЂIbizaвЂ™, a scathing takedown of lazy superstar DJs featuring Sleaford Mod Jason Williamson, who is excellent barking out the chorus line, вЂњWhatвЂ™s he fucking doing!?вЂќ But вЂThe Day Is My EnemyвЂ™ is far from a comedy record. It opens with a bombardment of military drums and electronic noise (the title-track, which features a vocal from Tricky collaborator Martina Topley-Bird) before dropping into single вЂNastyвЂ™ вЂ“ a classic big beat Prodigy tune and a perfect vehicle for Keith FlintвЂ™s singing/yelling. As songwriter Liam Howlett told NME last year: вЂњTracks that we like playing live from вЂInvadersвЂ¦вЂ™, like вЂOmenвЂ™ and вЂTake Me To The HospitalвЂ™, are the template for what we wanted to do with this record.вЂќ That means вЂThe DayвЂ¦вЂ™ is more вЂњviolent-soundingвЂќ, as Howlett also said, and at times itвЂ™s spectacularly aggressive. To hear вЂThe DayвЂ¦вЂ™ is to realise that вЂInvaders Must DieвЂ™ was a transitional record. It was the first Prodigy album not released by XL вЂ“ a label built upon their success вЂ“ and instead emerged on their own Take Me To The Hospital imprint, which they hoped to use to release other artistsвЂ™ music, but havenвЂ™t. вЂAlways Outnumbered, Never OutgunnedвЂ™, which was received coolly as the delayed follow-up to 1997вЂ™s 10-million selling вЂThe Fat Of The LandвЂ™, is a significant, leftfield record in their catalogue and if вЂInvaders Must DieвЂ™ was their patchiest offering вЂ“ despite reaching Number One вЂ“ itвЂ™s possible to understand it now as being a symptom of upheaval behind the scenes.

You could also argue that while their shows have lost none of their power over their 25-year career, their albums have. Liam Howlett, Keith Flint and Maxim Reality leave long gaps between them (the last one, вЂInvaders Must DieвЂ™, came out in 2009 its predecessor, вЂAlways Outnumbered, Never OutgunnedвЂ™ five years before that), and theyвЂ™ve been road-testing material from sixth album, вЂThe Day Is My EnemyвЂ™, in the run-up to its release for over a year, as if the primary purpose of recording new songs is to create more ammunition for their gigs. On the 26th of January 2015 the band released the official audio for the title track 'The Day Is My Enemy' on their official YouTube channel.Д®ssex rave legends The Prodigy have become such a consistent and huge live draw in the 21st century вЂ“ uniquely capable of headlining both rock and dance festivals like Sonisphere and Global Gathering, as they did last year вЂ“ itвЂ™s tempting to think of their albums as subsidiary to their shows. The album title is a reference to the Cole Porter song 'All Through the Night', in particular its lyrics 'the day is my enemy, the night my friend', although it is the Ella Fitzgerald version that first inspired the title track. The first single, 'Nasty', was announced on the band's Instagram and Facebook pages on 29 December 2014.

The album will be released by Three Six Zero Music/Warner Bros. It is the follow-up to 2009's Invaders Must Die and is to be released on 30 March 2015. The Day Is My Enemy is the upcoming sixth studio album by British electronic music group The Prodigy.
